Every year, countless athletes gather at Mountain Creek to compete at the Special Olympics. It's a time when individuals from diverse backgrounds come together to celebrate athleticism in the context of inclusion.

Recently, Dinu, Director of AccessibilityAtlas (AA), had the privilege of volunteering at this remarkable event, and described it as an amazing experience that everyone should try at least once.

Upon arriving at Mountain Creek, Dinu was struck by the diverse group of athletes, each with their unique abilities and stories. From experienced skiers to newcomers, the event truly showcased the inclusivity at the heart of the Special Olympics. After a brief orientation led by the incredible staff, explaining each volunteer’s role, everyone took the gondola up the mountain and waited for the athletes to begin racing.

As the athletes approached the race start, their focus and excitement were palpable. Dinu observed how much the athletes valued the experience. As they skied down the course, moments of sheer determination and courage were on full display. These athletes, facing various challenges, navigated the mountain with resilience and joy, uplifted by the enthusiastic support of volunteers and spectators alike.

In a world often marked by division, events like these serve as powerful reminders of our shared humanity. Regardless of background or ability, people can come together to celebrate one another’s accomplishments and ensure equal access to opportunity. Volunteering at the Special Olympics NJ Alpine Ski Racing Event was, for Dinu, a deeply memorable experience that reinforced the importance of inclusion and community. It was never about the drama of competition—but the simple joy of showing up for one another.

Dinu encourages everyone to consider volunteering with the Special Olympics. Check out their website and upcoming events below!
